Twelve boxes. Twelve nights. One question.
On December 13, Grandpa Ike gives seven-year-old Wren twelve small, empty boxes and a note: Fill each one with something you can’t buy.
Wren is sure everything can be bought. Then she thanks a bus driver nobody notices. She sits with the new girl. She tells the truth when it’s scary, shares the last bite, and shovels a neighbor’s steps in secret with Grandpa. Every night, Grandpa asks the same question: what did it cost?
Because the good things in life are free, but they are never cost-free. They cost patience, courage, a favorite seat, or the prize you wanted. And on Christmas Eve, Wren discovers the twelfth box is the one you give away.
A countdown story to read one night at a time:
Because the countdown begins on December 13, there is still time to start it this year even after December is underway.
For ages 4 to 8. A warm family tradition for the weeks before Christmas, a natural gift from a grandparent, and a story that keeps its meaning long after the wrapping paper is gone.
