When the topmost watch reveals the name of the Home Secretary—ticking steadily toward a crimson mark set to strike within the hour—Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson are hurled into a desperate race through the fog-choked streets of Victorian London.
The investigation leads from the sealed, ancient loculi of the Western Catacombs into the subterranean ruins of the abandoned 1860s Pneumatic Despatch railway. Beneath the rushing, subterranean torrents of the River Fleet lurks Sebastian Pendelton—a brilliant, betrayed engineer whom the world believed burned to ashes four years ago. Armed with an unquenchable grievance, Pendelton has turned the municipal hydraulic power grid of London into a colossal instrument of mechanical retribution.
