From Ordinary to Extraordinary is a memoir in letters — twenty-seven of them — written by an ordinary Korean girl who grew up between the smell of new textbook paper and English news on the radio, and who has never quite outgrown either.
Joohyun Lee's working life has moved through three careers braided by one thread: the English language. She began as an English news anchor in Gwangju, training her non-native voice through hundreds of live broadcasts. She spent years as one of the few women on the Korean defense-industry floor, opening the post-war Iraqi market and presenting at UAE Army Headquarters. After the birth of her child, one sentence from a friend across an ocean — "Joohyun, try teaching English" — carried her into her third life, designing lectures for corporate learners in Seoul, Jakarta, Dubai, and Lima.
This is not a success story. It is a letter. A letter about grandmothers' hands, subway doors that catch your bag, hateful comments that make you cry, and the small warm sentences that keep a life lit. It is written in the voice of an older sister to a friend she hasn't met yet — you.
You don't have to read it all the way through. Carry one sentence with you today, and close the book. That is the only wish she places at the front of these pages.
