Synopsis

Air conditioning work and commercial refrigeration share the same cycle, the same refrigerants and the same gauges. Everything else is different: the operating temperatures, the duty cycle, the controls standing between the thermostat and the compressor, the necessity of defrost, and the cost of being wrong. A comfort system that underperforms makes a building uncomfortable. A refrigeration system that underperforms destroys inventory overnight, quietly, while nobody is watching the box temperature.

The system is also tightly coupled, which is what makes it hard. An undercharge and a restricted liquid line both read low on suction. Worn compressor valves and a fouled condenser both run hot. Reading one measurement in isolation produces confident, wrong conclusions. But because the effects propagate predictably, a small set of readings taken together forms a signature, and different faults produce different signatures.
