Then Rachel examines the body buried under Mercer’s name and discovers that someone else is inside the grave.
As she traces the false certificate through rural courthouses, funeral homes, and restricted state databases, Rachel uncovers a hidden system that gives criminals something more valuable than a new identity: a legally documented death. The same network that erased living property owners is now helping dangerous people disappear from every police database in the country.
Mercer claims he was framed for the clerk’s murder. He also claims Rachel’s name is already on the network’s next death certificate.
