Some places are described before anyone arrives.
Europe, autumn 2026. The automated systems have outlived their work, and a magnetic weather gathers wherever there is metal. Engines fall silent. Compasses turn towards drains. A shutter hesitates, and a person can know exactly what to do and still be unable to begin. Ahead of every traveller, the Survey publishes verified accounts of roads, valleys and villages that no one has yet reached.
Calvin, a photographer from Munich, sets out with two cameras, one of them his grandmother's, and a letter from the Survey that he refuses to open. He is looking for the last places that have not been written down in advance: places where a person standing against rock can still give a landscape its size.
His road runs east and then north. Over the Alps to Vienna, across the plain to Budapest, into the wooden villages of Maramureș, over the Tatras to Warsaw, then under sail across the Baltic and on foot into the long winter dark of Lofoten. He walks with the people who share his road for a while: a friend who counts the minutes, a woman in a village of wooden churches, a companion carrying an old cloth map out of a library cellar, a surveyor who has measured the same brass mark three times. Somewhere ahead of him, his sister is leaving notes on the boards.
Written with a photographer's eye for light, distance and the human figure in landscape, The Origin of Places is a quiet, unsettling debut novel about presence and scale: about what a photograph can hold, what it cannot, and the one mark that does not move.
Revised edition, 2026. Expanded and newly edited, following the complete journey from Munich to the islands of Lofoten. Cover photograph by the author.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - The machines keep working. The people stand still. Europe, 2026. Automated systems exchange instructions long after their work is done. Around them, magnetic weather gathers. A shutter hesitates. A person knows what to do and cannot begin. Calvin leaves Munich with two cameras and a route east. Across mountain paths, village kitchens and cities caught in repetition, he tries to preserve what he sees on film. The women who share his journey ask him to look beyond the frame. On the northern coast, the ground is changing faster than any map can follow. Calvin must decide what he can carry forward, and what it means to stay beside someone. A shutter hesitates. On an opera stage, bodies no longer obey the singers intentions. Automated systems exchange instructions long after their tasks are complete. In the world of The Origin of Places, this excess spreads as magnetic weather. Familiar movements become uncertain, and the ground no longer follows the maps. Calvin leaves Munich with two cameras and a route east. His journey takes him across mountain paths, through village kitchens and cities caught in repetition, before turning towards the northern coast. Working on film, he tries to preserve a record of places that are changing. The people he meets bring their own destinations, needs and limits. The novel stays close to the physical conditions of this journey. Wet clothes need to dry, food has to be prepared, someone has to take the next step. The women who accompany Calvin interrupt his habits as an observer. Making an image and staying beside another person increasingly demand different decisions. At the coast, the question becomes what can be carried forward at all. N° de réf. du vendeur 9798172178559
