In 2023, Natasha Ball was diagnosed with Immune Mediated Necrotizing Myopathy (IMNM), a rare and incurable muscle disease. Before her diagnosis, her life was filled with family, work, horses, travel and the rugged landscapes of the Pilbara. In a short space of time, that life changed dramatically.
In Dancing in a Myositis Storm, Natasha shares her personal experience of adjusting to chronic illness, navigating hospital stays and ongoing treatment, coping with pain and fatigue, and coming to terms with the loss of independence and the uncertainty that IMNM brings.
She also reflects on the importance of family, connection, advocacy and learning to adapt to a life that looks very different from the one she once knew. Through the difficult days, she discovers new ways to find purpose, accept support and hold on to the parts of herself that illness cannot take away.
This is an honest account of living with a rare disease and of finding resilience, meaning and hope while learning to move forward one day at a time.
