Aircraft propulsion sits at the intersection of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, combustion science, structural mechanics, and control systems. Few subjects in engineering curricula reward a systems-level view as richly as propulsion does: a compressor blade cannot be understood in isolation from the cycle it serves, and a cycle cannot be understood without reference to the mission the aircraft must fly. This book was written to give students, early-career engineers, and enthusiasts a single, coherent narrative that carries the reader from the first principles of thermodynamic cycles through to the operating characteristics of the turbojet, turbofan, turboprop, ramjet, and scramjet, and finally to the performance metrics used to compare and select engines for real aircraft.
The organization of the book follows the logic of the gas path itself. After establishing the thermodynamic foundation of the ideal and real Brayton cycle, the book proceeds component by component — intake, compressor, combustor, turbine, and nozzle — before assembling those components into complete engine architectures. Ramjet and scramjet propulsion, which dispense with rotating turbomachinery altogether, are treated in dedicated chapters that emphasize how high-speed flight changes the fundamental compression and combustion problem. A dedicated chapter on propulsion performance draws together thrust, specific fuel consumption, and the propulsive, thermal, and overall efficiencies that ultimately determine an engine's suitability for a given mission. The closing chapters address materials and manufacturing, environmental and noise considerations, and the emerging technologies — hybrid-electric, hydrogen, and adaptive-cycle propulsion — that are reshaping the field.
Every chapter combines descriptive engineering explanation with the governing equations needed to perform first-order design and performance calculations, worked numerical examples, comparison tables, and end-of-chapter review questions intended to consolidate understanding. All diagrams in this book are original schematic illustrations prepared specifically for this text; they are deliberately simplified to emphasize the physical principle being taught rather than to replicate any particular manufacturer's hardware.
This text assumes a working knowledge of undergraduate thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. It is intended primarily for students in the third or fourth year of an aerospace or mechanical engineering programme, for postgraduate students beginning research in propulsion, and for practising engineers who need a single-volume refresher on the field. Numerical values quoted for pressure ratios, bypass ratios, turbine inlet temperatures, and specific fuel consumption are representative of publicly reported ranges for the classes of engine discussed; they should be understood as illustrative of design trends rather than as specifications of any single named product.
I am grateful to the long tradition of propulsion textbooks and technical literature that shaped my own understanding of this subject, and to the students whose questions, over many years, revealed which explanations needed to be clearer. I hope this book offers a rigorous yet accessible foundation for anyone seeking to understand how an aircraft is pushed, or pulled, through the air.
