One name. Two birthdays. Two sisters separated by a record designed to keep one of them safe.
When Loughhaven Library receives retired district nurse Edith Marlow’s birthday book, probate genealogist Anna Harland finds an impossible entry. Rose Evelyn Hart was born on 9 March 1956. Beneath it, in another hand, someone has written an official birthday exactly one year later—and warned that the record must not be corrected until the elder child is safe.
Two birth certificates name the same mother and different fathers. One Rose died childless. The other may still be living as Eleanor Davies, a retired teacher who insists she was never adopted, renamed or given a second birthday.
The mystery matters because David Hart’s will leaves six occupied harbour cottages to “the daughter whose first birthday was written by the nurse and whose second birthday was chosen by the family”. Unless Anna, conservator Maya Singh, researcher Daniel Harland and solicitor Frances Morrow can establish the right daughter within eight weeks, Harbour Row will be sold for redevelopment.
Their search leads through a sealed court order, a hidden guardianship file, two infant identifiers, matching birthday cakes, a photograph repaired across two different years and the testimony of the younger sister who spent her life preserving another woman’s place.
The evidence can identify the beneficiary. But a fair solution must also honour the sister who carried the duplicated name, the guardian who provided daily safety and the tenants who kept Harbour Row standing.
The Birthday Written in Two Hands is a clean British inheritance mystery about identity, protection, consent and the difference between preserving a person and controlling her story. It is Book Fifteen of The Loughhaven Inheritance Mysteries and resolves its central case completely.
