Synopsis

When monsoon floodwater rises through the floor of an eight hundred year old temple sanctum, widowed muralist Bhagyalakshmi does not just lose a wall. She loses the last steady thing in a life that has already taken her husband, and very nearly her nerve. She has sixty days and a shrinking budget to restore a fresco her own family has tended for six generations, or watch the temple committee cover it with a printed photograph of itself and call it saved. What she uncovers instead is harder to fix than damp plaster. A rival contractor offers a cheaper, faster fix that would seal the damage rather than heal it. A new heritage grant will pay for real restoration, but only if she trains a certified apprentice, and the guild register that decides who counts as "certified" has not admitted an outsider in six generations. Her late husband's own notebook is missing its most important page, cut out and never explained. And the one person willing to learn everything she knows is a house painter's daughter with no family claim to the craft at all. To finish the wall, Bhagyalakshmi has to break a rule she once believed in, teach in secret, and confront a brother-in-law who has spent thirty years guarding tradition out of fear rather than love. She has to face her failing eyesight, a scaffolding accident that could have cost a young woman her life, and a son who wants to sell the family's last pigment quarry out from under her before she can finish. Every part of the restoration costs her something she is not sure she can afford to give. This is a novel about what it actually takes to keep something precious alive across generations. Not a locked door, guarded jealously until there is no one left to open it for. A hand held steady long enough to teach another hand the same patience, the same color, the same stubborn hope, so that when one pair of eyes finally fails, the wall does not have to fail with it. It is a story about grief that softens into gratitude, pride that finally learns to bend, and the particular, quiet courage it takes to let someone else finish what you started.
