Synopsis

Discovering the Great Green Macaw
The Great Green Macaw is one of the largest, most powerful, and most visually impressive parrots of the American tropics. Its scientific name is Ara ambiguus, and it is sometimes called Buffon’s macaw or the great military macaw. This magnificent bird belongs to the macaw group within the parrot family and is recognized for its predominantly green plumage, long tail, massive curved bill, expressive facial skin, and loud carrying calls. Its combination of intelligence, strength, social complexity, and rarity makes it an extraordinary species worthy of careful study and protection.
In the wild, the Great Green Macaw is closely associated with humid tropical forests and surrounding landscapes where large fruiting trees provide food, shelter, and nesting opportunities. It spends much of its life high in the forest canopy, traveling between feeding areas in pairs, family groups, or small flocks. Although its size and powerful voice make it highly noticeable, it can become surprisingly difficult to see when resting among dense green foliage. Its coloration provides effective camouflage, while its strong wings allow it to travel considerable distances in search of seasonal food.
The Great Green Macaw is not simply a larger version of a familiar household parrot. It is a highly specialized wild bird with demanding physical, mental, social, and environmental needs. Its intelligence requires constant stimulation, while its enormous bill and strong body demand secure surroundings and appropriate outlets for chewing and movement. Anyone studying its care must first understand that responsible involvement requires extensive preparation, legal compliance, avian veterinary support, substantial space, and a lifelong commitment.
Unfortunately, the species faces severe pressure in the wild. Habitat destruction, loss of large nesting trees, forest fragmentation, hunting, and illegal capture have contributed to population decline. BirdLife International has classified the Great Green Macaw as Critically Endangered, emphasizing the urgent need to protect its remaining populations and habitats. Understanding the species therefore involves appreciating not only its beauty but also its conservation importance and the responsibility humans have to prevent its disappearance.
Understanding the Species
The Great Green Macaw belongs to the genus Ara, which includes several of the best-known large macaws of Central and South America. Its accepted scientific name is Ara ambiguus, first formally described in the early nineteenth century. Like other macaws, it possesses a highly developed brain, strong social instincts, dexterous feet, excellent vision, and a large hooked bill capable of cracking hard seeds and manipulating food with remarkable precision.
Two commonly recognized forms are associated with different parts of the species’ range. The nominate form, Ara ambiguus ambiguus, occurs mainly through portions of Central America into northwestern Colombia, while Ara ambiguus guayaquilensis is associated with western Ecuador. The Ecuadorian population is especially restricted and has long been considered highly vulnerable because of its isolation and very small distribution. These regional differences are important because conservation programs must address the specific habitat conditions and threats affecting each population.
