The first encounter with a poison arrow frog is often unforgettable. Some display bold stripes, spots, or irregular markings, while others possess nearly uniform coloration. These patterns vary widely between species and even between local populations, making identification both exciting and challenging.
Despite their common name, poison arrow frogs are not all equally toxic. The name originated from the traditional use of skin secretions from certain highly toxic species by Indigenous peoples of South America.
