Synopsis

Europe did not suddenly awaken at war in September 1939. The road to catastrophe was traveled step by step.

From the Night of the Long Knives to the Beginning of the Second World War, the second book in The Protocols series, follows the consolidation of Hitler’s dictatorship and the gathering crisis that transformed Germany—and then Europe.

Beginning with the murderous purge of June 1934, the chronology traces the creation of the Nazi racial state, the Nuremberg Laws, German rearmament, the remilitarization of the Rhineland, the Spanish Civil War, the Anschluss with Austria, the Munich crisis, Kristallnacht, and the destruction of Czechoslovakia. Along the way, governments compromise, institutions yield, ordinary people adapt, resist, flee—or remain silent.

The story is told through the voices of those who lived it: diaries, letters, newspapers, speeches, government documents, photographs, and eyewitness accounts. Victor Klemperer records the tightening circle around Germany’s Jews while journalists, diplomats, soldiers, propagandists, and ordinary citizens reveal a continent watching the boundaries of the possible steadily move.

By September 1939, the question was no longer whether another European war could be avoided.

It had begun.
