Civil infrastructure is, in a very real sense, the physical substrate of civilisation. The bridges we cross, the buildings we occupy, the water that reaches our taps, and the roads that carry our goods and our daily lives were, for most of engineering history, designed once, built once, and then managed largely through periodic inspection and institutional memory. That approach served reasonably well for a while, but it is increasingly inadequate for the scale, complexity, and ageing profile of the infrastructure now in service across the world, and it wastes an enormous amount of the information that infrastructure assets themselves are capable of generating if we simply choose to listen.
The digital twin concept, and the constellation of technologies that make it practical — Building Information Modelling, the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and the real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance capabilities they enable — offers a genuinely different proposition. It asks us to treat an infrastructure asset not as a static artefact handed over at the end of construction, but as a living system whose condition can be continuously observed, understood, and, where necessary, acted upon throughout its entire service life. This book was written to provide a comprehensive, structured introduction to that proposition: what digital twins are, how the enabling technologies work individually and together, and how they are being applied — imperfectly, but with growing sophistication — across the major infrastructure typologies that make up the built environment.
I have organised the book around the four technological pillars named in its subtitle, because I believe understanding each pillar on its own terms, before considering their integration, is the most reliable path to genuine competence in this field. Part I establishes conceptual foundations. Part II examines BIM as the digital twin's structural and semantic backbone. Part III addresses the Internet of Things and the sensing technologies that give a twin its connection to physical reality. Part IV turns to artificial intelligence and the analytical techniques that convert raw data into insight. Part V applies all of this across bridges, buildings, tunnels and dams, transportation networks, and water infrastructure. Part VI closes with predictive maintenance strategy, governance, cybersecurity, economics, and a look toward the field's likely future.
Throughout, I have tried to be honest about the current state of practice rather than presenting an idealised vision disconnected from operational reality. Many of the capabilities discussed in this book — particularly the more advanced predictive and prescriptive analytics discussed in Part IV, and the autonomous digital twin maturity level introduced in Chapter 3 — remain more common in research and pilot deployment than in routine, at-scale operational practice. I have tried throughout to distinguish clearly between established, widely deployed practice and emerging, still-developing capability, in the belief that a reader who understands this distinction is better equipped to make sound decisions than one presented with an undifferentiated account of technological possibility.
This book is intended for postgraduate students in civil, structural, and infrastructure engineering; for practising engineers and asset managers seeking a structured, comprehensive introduction to digital twin concepts and their practical application; and for technology professionals working in construction and infrastructure technology who need to understand the specific, often demanding constraints that physical infrastructure imposes on the general-purpose digital technologies discussed throughout. Each chapter closes with key takeaways and review questions designed to support both classroom instruction and independent study.
