Synopsis

AI doesn't need to get any smarter to take over the maintenance department. It needs to notice a unit has left its band, do the PMs, and swap the part. All three have existed for years. What's missing is a plant built to let it happen.

The Replaceable Factory lays out that plant. Every unit is designed to come out like a magazine out of a pistol and be exchanged in hours, not opened up where it stands for a week. The one that came out gets rebuilt, stripped or scrapped somewhere else. There is no ceiling: anything too big to lift gets rails, or gets cut into modules until it can be lifted.

It was never the module against the part. It's the machine against the payroll. Sixty tradesmen on shifts is more than five million dollars a year in wages alone, and that's the number a replaceable plant is competing with.

Ryan McIntosh is a Red Seal millwright with thirty years on the tools, twelve of them in research and development, in almost every kind of plant there is. He wrote this knowing it argues his own trade out of existence. It's going to happen anyway, and he'd rather be the man who wrote it down.

For owners, engineers and anyone building the next plant. The appendices are written as specification language you can paste straight into a tender.
