Tantra shaped Hindu temple worship, the theology of the great goddesses, the yogic map of chakras and kundalini, and much of what the world now calls yoga. Yet its very name has come to mean everything from sorcery to sensuality, and almost nothing of what its own texts teach. This book restores the record.
In 102 concise chapters, Dr. Mohit Bhandwal presents the whole tradition as its own sources describe it. Part I traces its origins and its relationship with the Vedas. Part II unfolds its philosophy: Shiva and Shakti, the thirty-six tattvas, kundalini and the subtle body, and the Kashmirian doctrine of recognition. Parts III and IV present the twin sciences of mantra and yantra, from the seed syllables and the great deity mantras to the geometry of the Shri Yantra. Part V introduces the deities: the ten Mahavidyas, Durga, the living Sri Vidya lineage, Bhairava, Ganesha and Shiva. Part VI describes ritual and sadhana, from puja and nyasa to homa and the initiate's daily practice. Part VII addresses the Five Ms, the left-hand paths and the "black magic" reputation historically and academically, without sensationalism. Part VIII sets out what an honest modern practice can look like. Part IX surveys the major texts (Tantraloka, Vijnana Bhairava, Kularnava, Mahanirvana, Devi Mahatmya), the Vajrayana and Nath traditions, and the modern career of Tantra from the colonial encounter to the global marketplace.
Written for the general reader, the student of Indian philosophy, and the practitioner who wants to understand the roots of the discipline, the book is descriptive and historical throughout. It is not a manual of ritual instruction. Its purpose is proportion: to replace rumor with record, and to hand back the map of a great tradition to any reader willing to walk it.
Features: 102 chapters across 9 parts; front-matter timeline of Tantric history; a Sanskrit glossary with IAST transliteration for every important term; a curated further reading list; embedded illustrations of key mantras and yantras.
