Synopsis

NOBODY GOES TO IRONWOOD AFTER DARK.

Kilbride, inland Queensland, 1992. Two kilometres out of town lies Ironwood: a poisoned waterhole, a forgotten cemetery, the ruins of a gold-rush church, and one enormous fig whose hanging roots stand in the dark like the pillars of a great black hall.

When two steers are found dead at the water’s edge, the town falls back on its oldest fear. Dr Andrew Hale, a city vet posted to the scrub, does not believe a word of it. At the lunch table he makes a promise: he will spend a night alone at Ironwood, and come back to tell them there is nothing there.

Knowing pretty well he will not come back, the locals try hard to prevent him going to Ironwood.

Old Mick Doolan knows even better. For thirty-five years he has kept a secret about a blue shirt, a girl called Peggy, and a body that fell from the fig.

At midnight, Andrew drives in under the tree, switches off his headlights, and waits for the ghosts.
