Synopsis

Meet twenty holy men of the Orthodox Church: who they were, when the Church remembers them, and how to pray alongside them.

A carpenter who protected a mother and child. A fisherman who denied Christ three times and was restored. A desert monk, a generous bishop, a preacher exiled for the truth, a former robber who became a man of peace, a forest hermit, a missionary who defended the people of Alaska, a parish priest among the poor, an immigrant bishop in Brooklyn and a patriarch under persecution. Their lives span two thousand years, and no two of them followed the same path.

Holy Men in My Daily Walk is a companion for readers who want to know the saints of Orthodoxy as real men, each answering God in his own time and place. Each chapter includes:

• A brief chronology of his life
• His feast day, and why the Church remembers him on that date
• A clear, readable account of his life, drawn from Scripture and official Orthodox sources such as the Orthodox Church in America
• A historical note distinguishing the Gospel record and documented history from later tradition
• A newly written prayer for private devotion
• Church sources for further reading

A calendar index arranges the saints by feast day, so you can follow them through the Church year.

The saints include Joseph the Betrothed, John the Baptist, the Apostle Peter, the Apostle Andrew, Anthony the Great, Nicholas of Myra, Basil the Great, John Chrysostom, Ephraim the Syrian, Moses the Black, Sergius of Radonezh, Gregory Palamas, Seraphim of Sarov, Herman of Alaska, Innocent of Alaska, John of Kronstadt, Raphael of Brooklyn, Tikhon of Moscow, John of Shanghai and San Francisco, and Porphyrios of Kafsokalyvia.

Written with honesty and care, this book doesn't hold up one way of being a faithful man. Husbands and fathers, monks and bishops, missionaries and parish priests: each shows a different face of holiness.

Ideal for personal devotion, feast-day reading, men's groups, Sunday school and anyone who wants to know the saints of the Church better.

Written by Maria Bleahu, a priest's daughter who grew up in the life of the Church.

The companion to A Man's Daily Walk with the Saints, which offers a short reflection, practice and prayer for every day of the year.
