Synopsis

Fourteenth-century Java. The Majapahit realm stands at the height of its power, its influence reaching across seas, while temples, monasteries, markets, and royal estates flourish throughout the island.

At the centre of this world is Mpu Prapanca—a Buddhist monk, poet, and keen observer of the court of King Hayam Wuruk. When he joins the great royal progress across East Java, Prapanca witnesses far more than the splendour of an empire. Beyond the processions, sacred shrines, prosperous villages, and magnificent capital lie ambition, faith, rivalry, loss, and the fragile lives of the people whose stories rarely enter royal chronicles.

With a pengrupak in his hand and narrow lontar leaves before him, Prapanca begins recording the world he has seen. What begins as praise of a king gradually becomes something greater: an attempt to preserve an entire civilization against the passage of time.

Inspired by the Desawarnana—better known as the Nagarakretagama—and the surviving archaeology of Majapahit, MPU PRAPANCA: THE POET OF MAJAPAHIT is a richly imagined historical novel about memory, devotion, power, and the extraordinary monk-poet whose words would carry the world of fourteenth-century Java into the present.
