COFFEE AND THE BERETTA
Where there's coffee, there's a return
by Simone Giaquinto
Simone Giaquinto, author of The Italian Gentleman, Codice Italia, The Art of Being Whole, and numerous other books, takes us back to a period in his life when he was a policeman. For years, he traveled with two presences at his side: Coffee and the Beretta. The coffee in front of him, hot, bitter, familiar. The Beretta at his side, cold, silent, burdened with responsibility. From this image, an intimate and profoundly Italian story is born: a journey through provincial bars, late-night service stations, airports, home kitchens, different cities, and women encountered by chance, where every cup becomes a pause, a memory, a chance to return. In Italy, coffee is more than just a drink: it is ritual, belonging, seduction, respite. It is the scent of home, the language of the bar, the excuse to stay a moment longer. Alongside this daily ritual walks the Beretta, a symbol of duty, limitation, and Italian tradition: not a celebration of the weapon, but the story of the moral weight of those who carried it to serve and protect. Through sensuality, sometimes restrained, irony, nostalgia, and a sense of honor, this book traverses the truest Italy: that of small gestures, of coffees offered, of sentences left unsaid or encounters experienced like a wave, of female gazes that teach restraint and respect. Coffee and the Beretta is a relaxing, elegant, and autobiographical work, at times poetic and sensual, which speaks of duty and desire, road and home, belonging and freedom.
A book about the ability to remain human even when life demands steadfastness.
Because in Italy, coffee is not just drunk.
It is lived.
