Synopsis

Rita is finishing sixth grade. Fran is finishing fifth. Next year, they'll be in different schools, but they have big plans for the summer--throwing slumber parties, going swimming. and building tree forts. Fran also has to practice fractions, and Daren, the new kid, is hanging around Rita. That, plus Fran has to navigate through getting her period, keeping track of younger brothers, and dealing with parents. Growing up isn't as easy as they thought. Will this be their last summer as friends?

Set in the summer of 1963, this novel explores common pre-teen challenges--wanting to grow up, but not quite wanting to let go of childhood, maintaining friendships through change. as well as realizing that parents are just human. Rita learns that telling the truth gains respect and freedom and that forgiveness and loyalty are part of being a true friend.
