A WORD BEFORE THE ORDERS
In the night, before the morning is yet come
Behold, I set before thee a witness of the night and of the morning; for it beginneth where the saints begin, in the hearing of the lion, and it endeth where the saints shall end, in the settling of the eternal glory. I have not brought thee a word of ease, neither a flattering saying that crieth Peace where there is a lion; for the apostle himself spake of the devourer before he spake of the dominion, and I dare not reverse the order that the Spirit hath set.
Verily, I have walked the passage as a man walketh a single road from the dark country unto the lighted city; and the way openeth in nine orders, the nine clauses of the apostle, and every order beareth its seventeen seals, that the whole might bear the number of the unbroken net; for the witness, like the net, must hold its multitude and not break.
Lo, read thou slowly, for this is bread and not a swift water. Take an order in the morning and an order in the evening; let the verse sink as seed into the furrow of thy heart, and look for the springing. And when the lion roareth in thy night, turn thou to the order of thy need: be it the watch, or the standing, or the fellowship, or the grace, or the calling, or the while, or the fourfold hand, or the doxology, or the standing in the true grace; for there is an order for every hour of thy suffering, and a prayer at the close of every order.
I speak briefly, as Silvanus wrote briefly, yet I have left no order barren; and I commit this witness unto the God of all grace, that he would use it to make thee perfect, and to stablish, and to strengthen, and to settle thee, unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus. Now enter thou by the first order, and read on.
