Synopsis

By every measure that mattered to the people who made him, Brak was a success. A body with an implant. A walking vault that could be searched, scanned, and shot at without ever giving up what was buried deepest inside it. For years he carried the most precious data of a collapsing world across sealed borders on foot — money, identities, coordinates, the lives of people on the run — until the implant had been written and overwritten so many times that his own self became just one more corrupted file in the stack.

Now he's awake in the wrong century with no idea who he is, and everyone is starting to notice what he's worth.

A green-haired woman who hates him knows what he is. A government that doesn't exist wants to make him president — or launch him to Pluto. A CIA agent in an ice cream truck wants to sell him to the highest bidder. And somewhere underneath all of it, the friends Brak built out of pure loneliness have been turned against him, taught to predict the one weakness he can't shake.

BRAK is a strange, tender, propulsive novel about being used and being known, about the difference between a person and a tool, and about a man who has carried everyone else's life and finally, desperately, wants one of his own — even if the only place he can have it is alone, at the cold edge of everything.
