Some letters take decades to reach their destination. Some loves take longer still.
Iris Fletcher has delivered other people's messages for eight years. Thirty-two, working-class, quietly lonely, she knows every stone cottage and rainy lane in the village of Ashfield — and nobody really knows her. Then a misdirected parcel leads her to a long-forgotten leather postbag, and inside it: a bundle of undelivered letters from 1937, all signed by one Ella Sutton, Aviatrix.
Ella died that same year, attempting an unprecedented solo flight from Scotland to Southampton — a working-class mill girl who dared to reach for the sky. Her route was never completed. Her story was never finished.
When Iris writes back — half out of loneliness, half out of obsession — Ella writes back.
What follows is a year of impossible correspondence across eight decades: two women falling in love through the only language available to them, while Iris trains to fly and prepares to complete the journey Ella never could. But the cost of finishing Ella's route is one neither of them can fully prepare for. Completing the flight means freeing Ella. And freeing Ella means letting her go.
