D-Day is arguably the most important event of the 20th century. That intense, brutal battle for those five beaches on the coast of Normandy, changed not only the course of the war, but human history, as it marked the beginning of the end for the Third Reich. But in a greater sense, the success of D-Day prevented the world from being completely dominated by either Communism or Fascism; two political philosophies with little distinction. But in order to succeed, the Allied invasion had to irrevocably smash through the vaunted Nazi "Atlantic Wall;" a veritable defense works that ran from Spain to Denmark and was believed to be impregnable. So the Allies' challenge on D-Day was undoubtedly tougher than any that has ever been confronted in world history.
The beach designated Omaha was by far the most formidable of the five and the only one assigned two Infantry divisions, both American: the 1st and the 29th. Those Americans, who landed on that beach on that horrific morning of 6 June 1944 belong in the Pantheon of real American Heroes. That is what motivated me to write this book and its sequels, to finally tell the complete and accurate story of the American soldiers who waged that critical battle, so crucial to the lives of all Americans - then and now!
There have been dozens of books written about this subject, most all of which I have read, so why do I think I can do better? Histories of large battles are almost always written in parallel, that is they relate a series of anecdotes that are more associated with the phase of the battle to the detriment of the actual sequence and progression of the battle. That makes it very difficult to discern the story, because the anecdotes are scattered all over the battlefield. To really understand what happened in any battle, it has be told as a linear story or a series of linear stories, which I have elected to do.
The story revolves around seven breaches in the Germain lines, all made before noon on D-Day. Then, like small leaks in a dam, where a trickle becomes a flood, more and more troops funneled through them to inundate and flank the German positions. Amazingly, these breaches can be attributed to the courage, innovation, and leadership of about a dozen men that ran the gamut of rank - from sergeant to general. Unfortunately, those brave men languish in obscurity, as sadly not one American in a hundred thousand can name any of them. It is their stories that I focus on - telling one from start to finish, then backing up and telling another. Eventually, they all come together in the culmination of the battle. This format should make the read much more understandable, cohesive, and interesting to the average person; one with only a passing interest in World War II, but who would like to know more. These are important stories that reflect the exceptionalism of the American people; stories that need to be understood, celebrated, and revered. They should make you want to stand up and cheer.
