It traces how colonial rule reorganized economies, institutions, languages, aspirations, and labor systems across parts of Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean — and how those transformations continued after independence.
The book follows the movement from former colonies to former imperial centers: from North Africa to France, Belgium, and the Netherlands; from the Commonwealth to Britain; from Turkish labor migration to Germany; and from postcolonial departure to the new possibilities of return. It asks not only why people left, but what happened to the societies they entered, the families they built, and the generations born between worlds.
