Preface:
How to Use This Handbook
This manual is organized around the real life of a Texas adult name change: preparation, filing, hearing, signed order, and identity propagation. A petitioner who stops after the signed order may still fail at the Social Security office, DPS appointment, bank branch, passport desk, payroll department, or voter registrar.
The book is intentionally procedural. It does not try to decide whether a particular person should file. It explains how to build a filing packet, prevent avoidable rejection, prepare for factual court questions, and update records after the court signs the order.
Use Part One to understand what a court-ordered name change can and cannot do. Use Part Two to prepare the verified petition, fingerprint routing proof, privacy handling, and filing packet. Use Part Three to choose the correct court, file through eFileTexas or the clerk, and repair mechanical rejections. Use Part Four to prepare for the hearing and obtain usable certified copies of the order. Use Parts Five through Seven to update federal, Texas, and private records in a dependency-aware sequence. Use the appendices as work surfaces. They are not decorative pages; they are control logs for the filing and identity-update process.
