Synopsis

When helicopter pilot Jonah Reyes flies into a Sonoma wildfire, he loses forty-seven minutes he can't account for, and comes back with a strange branching mark behind his ear and a flash of vision he can't explain: a child's eye, watching him from somewhere that shouldn't exist.

He isn't the only one caught in it. Geneticist Dr. Lena Vale is chasing a genome that shouldn't be possible. Federal investigator Naomi Cross has spent eleven years alone, pursuing a case her own agency buried. And a government operative named Wendell Pike is doing everything in his power to make sure none of them ever compare notes.

What they find, hidden aboard a vessel in low orbit, is first contact, but not the alien invasion any of them feared. It's humanity's own descendants, refugees from a dying future three million years downstream of a catastrophe of our own making, still paying for the choices that got them there. And it's a nine year old boy named Tavan, made from Jonah's own body without his knowledge or consent, who is about to make Jonah's fight the only one that matters.

The Pale Ring is a story about the debts one generation leaves the next, about families built across an impossible gap, and about what happens when the people who need saving and the people doing the saving turn out to be the same species, separated only by time. Between a nuclear standoff, a rescue that can't wait, and a sacrifice that can't be undone, its characters have to decide what they owe each other: as parents, as strangers, and as the last and future children of the same dying world.
