In April of 711, a Berber freedman named Tariq ibn Ziyad crossed eight miles of water with seven thousand frightened men in borrowed boats, without permission from anyone. Within six months he had destroyed a kingdom that had stood for three hundred years. Within eighteen he had been ordered to stop, publicly humiliated by the man who had once owned him, and written out of the story. He died in obscurity in Damascus around the year 720, with no command, no title, and no one recording the day.
Four thousand miles west, sailors had already begun calling the rock he landed under by his name. They have not stopped. Say Gibraltar out loud and you are saying the name of a man who never found out.
