Over the past two decades, healthcare has embraced digitalisation with the promise of greater efficiency. Yet for many family physicians, the result has been the opposite. We spend more time clicking than listening, more time documenting than thinking, and more time navigating software than caring for patients.

I did not set out to write a book about technology.

I wrote this book because I wanted to understand why so many well intentioned digital solutions have made the work of family medicine harder instead of easier. After years of running my own clinic, working alongside Dr Siaw Tung Yeng, and building digital healthcare solutions, I realised the problem was never simply the software. We had been designing technology around administrative processes instead of around the consultation itself.

That realisation changed how we thought about primary care.

This book is the result of that journey. It is not a technical manual, nor is it a product story. Instead, it is an exploration of a different way of thinking about primary care, one where the clinic is no longer an isolated destination but the living heart of a healthcare ecosystem that connects patients, clinicians and care beyond the consultation.

The ideas in these chapters come from years of clinical practice, countless conversations with colleagues, and the practical lessons learned from building and refining digital health systems. Some of the ideas may challenge assumptions that have become deeply embedded in healthcare. Others may seem surprisingly simple. My hope is that together they encourage us to rethink not only the technology we use, but also the way we design care itself.

If this book helps even one clinician spend more time looking at a patient instead of a computer screen, or inspires one healthcare leader to build systems that make medicine more human, then it will have achieved its purpose.
