The first form of this work was written as a basic guide. Its purpose was simple: to give the reader enough structure to create a personal system of magick without being forced to imitate mine. That remains the purpose of this book. I am not trying to make disciples. I am not trying to hand the reader a costume, a priesthood, or a closed system of belief. I am trying to explain the mechanism clearly enough that a serious person can understand what magick is, what it is not, and how symbols, attention, emotion, belief, ritual, and action can be arranged into a working personal practice. This version goes further. It keeps the basic practical purpose, but it also spends more time with other systems, older traditions, symbolic patterns, and the psychological details behind the work. Some readers will want a method. Some will want a philosophy. Some will want to understand why so many different forms of magick, religion, ritual, and spiritual practice seem to circle around the same human processes. This book is written for all of them. The practical reader should be able to build from it. The curious reader should be able to learn from it. The skeptical reader should at least be able to see that magick does not have to be treated as fantasy in order to be taken seriously.
