Synopsis

More than 2,300 years ago, Euclid of Alexandria wrote The Elements, the most influential mathematical work in history – a work that laid out the foundations of geometry and number theory so clearly and systematically that it served as a textbook for over two millennia.

This edition presents all 13 books of The Elements in full in German: from the fundamental definitions, postulates and principles of Book I, through the theorems on plane geometry, the theory of proportions and number theory, to the construction of the five Platonic solids in Book XIII.

Each theorem is presented in clear, accessible language – using the original designations for line segments, angles and figures, neatly typeset and accompanied by a complete, hyperlinked table of contents. Whether you are interested in the history of mathematics, wish to follow Euclid’s line of reasoning in the original, or simply want to rediscover the beauty of classical geometry – this work offers unadulterated access to one of the cornerstones of Western thought.
