What happens when intelligence becomes cheap enough to copy—and machines begin turning that intelligence into action?
From Tokens to Atoms examines whether artificial intelligence, robotics, abundant energy, and automated manufacturing could make the necessities of a good life dramatically easier to produce and obtain. It rejects both technological inevitability and reflexive pessimism, replacing them with a practical framework for determining when technological progress becomes genuine economic abundance.
The book follows AI’s journey from digital models to physical production: through chips, data centers, electricity, materials, robots, factories, laboratories, farms, warehouses, healthcare systems, and construction sites. It shows why impressive demonstrations do not automatically become dependable, affordable services—and how eliminating one constraint often causes scarcity to migrate somewhere else.
At the center of the book are five tests. Can AI produce accepted results at lower total cost? Can cognition be converted into reliable physical work? Can energy, compute, materials, and manufacturing scale with it? Will lower costs reach consumers? And will ordinary people possess the income, ownership, public benefits, and rights needed to command what the economy produces?
The analysis then turns to the human consequences: careers and education, declining entry-level opportunities, ownership and inequality, prices and inflation, regulation, geopolitical competition, and the investment landscape. Four possible futures emerge—from bottlenecked transformation and concentrated machine power to augmented capitalism and broad-based abundance.
The book’s conclusion is neither that post-scarcity is inevitable nor that scarcity must always win. AI can relax important limits on production, but abundance is a property of the entire economic and institutional system—not of the model at its entrance. The real prize is a society in which technological progress gives more people affordable essentials, safer work, meaningful ownership, usable time, and the power to choose.
