Synopsis

He woke drowning in amber, naked and unnamed, in a place he didn't recognize with people who spoke a language he only half understood. The crew of the Mourning Star, rough, wary, salvaging the deep Belt for scraps, took him in because he was useful. Because he could feel machinery like it was part of his own body. Because he could fix things before they broke.

They didn't know about the rest. The silver slowly taking his eyes. The cold spreading through his skin. The alien awareness rewriting his mind, piece by piece, offering him impossible gifts he dared not refuse and could never explain.

Ethan hid what he was becoming. He had to. Out here, in the dark between the rocks, a man who wasn't quite human was either a weapon or a threat. And the Collective, the ones who built their empire on extracting what people like him carried — were coming.

But some things can't be hidden forever. Some transformations are shared or lost. And some marks are left not on the body, but on the world.

Amberborn is hard science fiction at its most human a story of found family, alien transformation, and the choice to remain yourself when the universe offers you everything else.
