Prayer has always been the first ministry of every
faithful shepherd.
Before a chaplain preaches a sermon, leads a chapel
service, comforts a grieving student, encourages a
discouraged professor, advises a president, or
welcomes a new freshman, he must first kneel
before God. Throughout my years of pastoral
ministry and now as Senior Chaplain of Wheaton
College, I have become increasingly convinced that
the greatest gift a chaplain can give a Christian
campus is not simply biblical instruction, thoughtful
leadership, or excellent programming—it is faithful,
biblical intercession.
This book was born out of that conviction.
When I arrived at Wheaton College, I quickly
realized that this remarkable institution is much
more than classrooms, residence halls, and
administrative offices. It is a living community of
believers from around the world who have gathered
to seek Christ and prepare for lives of faithful
service. Every day I encountered students
discerning God's call, professors shaping Christian
minds, staff members serving quietly behind the
scenes, coaches discipling athletes, musicians
leading worship, missionaries preparing for the
nations, scientists exploring God's creation, and
leaders making decisions that will influence
generations yet to come.
As I walked across campus, I found myself praying
for every building, every department, every office,
every classroom, every faculty member, every staff
member, and every student. Soon I discovered that
the greatest strategic plan for a Christian college is
not merely organizational—it is spiritual. Before we
can educate well, we must pray well. Before we can
lead wisely, we must seek the wisdom of God.
Before we can send students into the world, we
must first send our prayers before them.
The Lord led me to the Book of Acts.
Acts is not simply the history of the early Church; it
is the story of what happens when ordinary people
live extraordinary lives through the power of the
Holy Spirit. Every chapter reveals a praying
Church, a worshiping Church, a serving Church, a
suffering Church, a unified Church, and a
missionary Church. It is, in many ways, the perfect
picture of what every Christian college should
become.
