Synopsis
Brody and Cooper’s mysterious blue collars carry them into the presidency of George H. W. Bush, a decorated World War II veteran, former vice president, and experienced public servant. As the enormous Saint Bernard and determined little Yorkshire Terrier meet America’s forty-first president, they witness a rapidly changing world shaped by the collapse of the Soviet Union, the end of the Cold War, and the fall of the Berlin Wall. They also explore Bush’s leadership during the invasion of Panama, the Persian Gulf War, and the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The dogs soon discover that military victories do not guarantee political success. A struggling economy, rising national debt, and Bush’s decision to break his famous “Read my lips: no new taxes” pledge weaken public confidence and contribute to his defeat after only one term. Brody and Cooper learn that Bush’s presidency was defined by both international achievement and difficult choices at home.
