Synopsis
In 1909, twenty-year-old Shankar Ray Choudhuri graduates with nothing but a love of geography and a dread of the clerical job waiting for him at a jute mill. When a chance comes to work for the Uganda Railway, he takes it — and finds himself alone in the wilds of East Africa, further from home than he ever imagined. He survives a man-eating lion and a venomous black mamba before falling in with Diego Alvarez, an aging Portuguese prospector chasing one last legend: a lost diamond mine hidden in the Richtersveld, guarded by something the local people call the Bunyip. Together they set out across the desert toward the Mountain of the Moon — and toward a discovery that will cost one of them everything.
First published in 1937, Chander Pahar became one of the most beloved adventure novels in Bengali literature — the book that sent generations of readers, including mountaineers who later climbed Kilimanjaro themselves, dreaming of Africa from a village in Bengal. It has since been adapted into film, comics, and radio drama. This new English translation brings Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay's classic to readers everywhere — including the many Bengali families around the world whose children and grandchildren grew up without learning to read the language, and who can now discover for themselves the book their parents and grandparents have always loved.
