Synopsis

A three-phase motor will not start. The disconnect is closed, the overload has not tripped, and a production line is down while the drawings taped to the panel door go unread, because nobody on shift can trace a rung through them.

Industrial electrical knowledge usually arrives in fragments. A theory course here, a code table there, a drive manual, a wiring habit picked up from whoever was on shift that night. None of those fragments survive contact with a live fault, because a fault does not respect the boundary between power distribution, control logic, and the motor itself.

This handbook rebuilds the subject as one continuous chain, from the incoming service to the last pilot light on the panel door. Thirty chapters in nine parts run in the order a real system does: foundations, drawings and control logic, motors, motor control equipment, electronic motor control, automation, installation and commissioning, maintenance and troubleshooting, and two applied projects. Two hundred and forty-eight technical figures carry the schematics, ladder diagrams and one-line drawings; calculations are worked line by line with units tracked; and expected readings are stated alongside the tests that produce them.

What the book equips you to do:

  • Trace any control circuit rung by rung and predict the state of every contact before a meter goes on it
  • Size conductors, protective devices and control transformers using calculations shown in full
  • Wire a starter, a reversing circuit, a two-speed circuit and an emergency stop function, and explain why every interlock is there
  • Read nameplates, one-line diagrams, ladder diagrams and wiring diagrams as one connected description of the same machine
  • Set up and commission a drive with a working understanding of what each parameter changes
  • Isolate faults by measurement, using symptom, test, expected value and correction tables

Topics covered:

Electrical quantities and power; test instruments and measurement practice; single-phase and three-phase systems; transformers and control power; power distribution and system grounding; conductors, overcurrent protection, coordination and short-circuit ratings; electrical safety, arc flash and energy isolation; symbols, diagrams and ladder logic; converting a process requirement into working control logic; induction, synchronous, direct current, permanent-magnet and servo motors; nameplates and motor selection; motor testing and failure modes; disconnects, contactors, starters, overload relays, timers, pilot devices and sensors; complete control circuits including reversing, jogging, two-speed, interlocking and emergency stop; reduced-voltage starting; soft starters; variable frequency drives; programmable controllers and input-output wiring; operator interfaces, industrial networks and motor control centres; functional safety; control panel design; testing, commissioning and acceptance; preventive and predictive maintenance; and systematic troubleshooting.

Two capstone projects close the book. A lead-lag pump station and a conveyor line with a drive and a rated safety function are each carried from the process description through the sequence of operation, the ladder design, device selection, wiring, commissioning, and a seeded fault found by measurement.

Written for industrial and maintenance electricians, controls and automation technicians, plant and facilities engineers, apprentices working toward licensure, and engineering and mechatronics students. The treatment follows United States installation practice with international cross-reference, and code-dependent values are edition-stamped so you can verify them against the edition adopted in your jurisdiction.

Open it at the chapter that matches the panel in front of you, work the example with a meter in your hand, and keep it where the drawings are.
