A library book is checked out. Ethan is holding it.
The faded orange copy of The Wandering Map should not be sitting on the shelf. According to the library computer, someone already has it. Its old checkout card raises an even stranger question: Why does the same name appear again and again, and why did the borrower disappear four years ago?
Ethan and Amaya begin tracking the book. It vanishes before school breaks. It returns without being scanned. Pages turn by themselves. The checkout machine beeps when nobody is near it.
Then the library announces a complete inventory.
If the missing book is not found by Friday afternoon, it will be removed and replaced with a clean copy that has none of the notes, worn corners, or history that made the original matter.
The clues point to two intruders.
One is a kid who does not want to be seen.
The other does not need a door.
To save the book, Ethan and Amaya must solve the mystery from the living side while Max and Toby work from the shadows. But helping without being discovered is getting harder, especially when Toby’s good intentions create an even bigger problem.
The Book That Came Back is a funny, gently spooky mystery about friendship, belonging, and the books people return to when they need to remember who they are.
