Synopsis

One story, two languages, and a child who naturally begins to understand both.

Sharing a story at bedtime is a beloved family ritual. Introducing a second language doesn't have to change that. Originally written by the Countess of Ségur (Comtesse de Ségur), a classic 19th-century children's author, to guide her own grandchildren, these gentle retellings make language learning a warm, natural part of your evening routine.

Open this book anywhere and you will find the same moment of a classic Bible story twice: the Comtesse's warm French on the left page, and a clear, natural English translation on the right. Moving paragraph by paragraph with matching numbers, you can read a line in French, hop across the spread, and hear exactly the same sentence in English. Children love hearing stories repeated, and that gentle repetition is precisely how a new language settles in.

The Magic of "Shared Vocabulary" Glosses

What makes this book truly unique is the innovative word-by-word helper text printed beneath every line.

• On the French page, each word carries a small English gloss.
• On the English page, each English word carries a small French gloss.
• The bilingual trick: Wherever the two pages share a word, the glosses reuse the same vocabulary on both sides. The French words a child learns on the left page are the exact same words printed under the English on the right. One story, one shared vocabulary, two languages.

Eighteen Stories Your Family Already Knows

By using familiar classic narratives, children can focus on the words without getting lost in the plot. Inside, you'll find:

• From the Old Testament: The Creation, Adam and Eve in the Garden, Noah's Ark, the Tower of Babel, Joseph and His Brothers, the Story of Moses, David and Goliath, Daniel in the Lions' Den, and Jonah and the Great Fish.
• From the New Testament: The First Christmas, the Boy Jesus in the Temple, the Miraculous Catch of Fish, Jesus Calms the Storm, the Loaves and the Fishes, Jesus Walks on the Water, the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son, and Easter Morning.

These stories are presented just as she told them: warm, direct, and completely free of doctrinal argument. The classic French has been lightly modernized for clarity, and the longest stories have been gently shortened to fit comfortably into a single bedtime slot.

Inside This Deluxe Edition:

• Authentic French: 18 complete stories in beautiful, lightly modernized French.
• Faithful English Mirror: A natural translation written specifically to be read aloud.
• Interlinear Shared Glosses: Word-by-word guides that make vocabulary recognition effortless.
• Original Artwork: 18 gorgeous, original watercolor paintings opening every story.
• Designed for Reading Together: A large 8x10-inch "lap book" format, with the French set in a distinct typeface so readers can see at a glance which language world they are in.
• Parent Guide: A friendly introduction on how to read a mirror book together.

Written to be Shared and Cherished

These stories are held in common across Christian traditions and told without theological debate, making the book a comfortable fit for any family. It is an ideal resource for bilingual households, parents introducing French to their children, homeschoolers, and language learners of all ages. It also makes a thoughtful, lasting gift for christenings, first communions, Christmas, or birthdays.

No pronunciation drills, no dry exercises, and no perfect accent required. Point at the words, do the voices, and explore together. This book is built to be reread, allowing every pass to plant a few more words.
