Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is based on the balance between accepting emotional experience and changing behaviors that create difficulties for the child. The book adapts this philosophy to the developmental needs of children ages 6–12, using simple images and familiar concepts such as Sage the Wise Owl, the Remote Control, the Energy Battery, and the Calm Wi-Fi Signal. In this way, abstract psychological concepts become concrete and easier to apply.
The 50 techniques are organized into five thematic sections and develop a broad range of skills. The child learns to identify body signals associated with emotions, to create distance from persistent or unhelpful thoughts, to use grounding and relaxation techniques, and to delay impulsive reactions. At the same time, the child practices managing waiting, disappointment, and conflict, as well as assertive communication, friendship, personal boundaries, and self-protection.
Each tool includes a specific objective, clinical guidance for adults, implementation steps, and experiential activities. This structure allows psychologists, special education professionals, therapists, teachers, and parents to select the techniques that meet the child’s current needs. The DBT Skills Scale included at the end of the book can support progress monitoring and the planning of the next intervention objectives.
