What happens when the person asking for your vote has actually lived the problems she's promising to fight?
Grace Nagamine grew up in Alamogordo's Chihuahuita neighborhood, raised by two fathers, a strong mother, and grandparents whose kitchen table was the center of the world. By fifteen, she was a mother. In the years that followed, she survived childhood abuse, domestic violence, homelessness, addiction, and jail — and she tells you all of it here, in her own words, before any opponent or headline can tell it for her.
Your Neighbor: Living the Fight is not a confessional and not a campaign brochure. It is the unvarnished story of how a shy girl who once covered her mouth when she laughed found her voice, rebuilt her life shift by shift, raised seven children, and turned her granddaughter Melanie's fight into Royal Angels — a nonprofit serving families across Otero County. It's the story of a military family, a deep faith, red enchiladas, twins born against the odds, and the long road from a cell door closing to a courthouse record marked satisfied.
It is also the story of why she's running — as an Independent — for New Mexico House District 51, and what she'll fight for: veterans and Holloman families, seniors and caregivers, children caught in a broken CYFD system, neighbors without a roof, small businesses, and the roads and water this desert community depends on.
Told with honesty, humor, and hard-won hope, this is a book about second chances — and about a neighbor who believes District 51 deserves one too.
Includes a reading and discussion guide, a plain-language glossary of legislative terms, and resources for getting involved.
