Some linguists have hypothesised structural affinities with the Altaic languages (Turkish, Mongolian), particularly regarding its agglutinative grammar, whilst others have noted phonetic similarities with the Austronesian languages. However, none of these theories has been definitively proven. This makes Japanese a unique case in the global linguistic landscape.
