Synopsis

Camden's night shelters have a monster problem, and nobody thought to mention it to the woman running intake.

Lola Mercer works triage before she works magic. Night shifts at North Camden's women's shelter. Days chasing a paramedic qualification she's earning the hard way, one exhausted rotation at a time. A rule she doesn't bend for anyone, wings or otherwise: boundary first, judgement second, joke third. It's a decent system. It holds up fine right up until something with too many legs and an appetite for vulnerable women decides her shelter's clientele looks like a buffet.

Camden Nights is set in the same world as Winston the Third — but down at street level, where nobody has wings, nobody's immortal, and everyone still has to clock in for their shift the next morning covered in someone else's blood. Lola isn't a hero by temperament. She's a woman who has spent her whole career being the person who stays calm when everyone else is allowed to fall apart, and that training turns out to be exactly what a city full of things that feed on desperate people needs — whether she signed up for it or not.

Expect body horror with a pulse behind it: creatures that exploit the same vulnerabilities predators always have, women who are patients and witnesses and survivors all at once and never just victims, and a found family stitched together out of shelter staff, paramedics, one deeply inconvenient immortal, and whoever else Lola refuses to let fall through the cracks. Expect gallows humour that never once apologises for existing, because if Lola stopped joking she'd stop functioning, and stopping isn't on the roster tonight.

This is not a soft series. It deals in the aftermath of violence against women with the same unflinching eye it turns on the monsters causing it, and it never treats survival as something that arrives free of cost. If you want your urban fantasy heroine to have scraped knuckles, a filthy mouth, a triage checklist running under everything she does, and zero patience for anyone's rescue fantasy — including her own — you're in the right shelter.

Ten books. One woman who refuses to let anyone bleed politely.
