Synopsis

The ordinary life she built was always a lie. The power she buried is waking up. And the woman who trained to stop her is the one she trusted most.

Branwen has spent her whole life making herself small. As apprentice to Hollis the smith in the village of Aldermere, she has worked hard at being unremarkable, at keeping the questions about her mother sealed behind years of careful avoidance. Ellinor is gone. Whatever she carried is gone with her. Branwen is iron and ordinary and safe.

Then a gryphon crashes near the millpond, and every careful lie she has told herself goes up in flame.

The flare brands her as a carrier of the Emberwyn bloodline, one of the founding lines the kingdom has spent decades quietly erasing. Within days, riders from the Circlet arrive to take her to Camlough for training, and Branwen, who has never wanted any of this, is given a choice that is barely a choice at all.

At Camlough, the training is rigorous and the secrets run deeper. Regent Aldric Payne arrives with a courteous offer and an iron will: let him crown her as a figurehead, lend her bloodline to his regency, and in exchange she'll have comfort, safety, and a future. It sounds almost reasonable. That's what makes it dangerous.

When Branwen refuses, the courtesy stops. Payne's riders intercept her on the road. Confinement replaces negotiation. And on the northern border, a manufactured confrontation is building that could spark the very war the Circlet has always claimed to be preventing.

But Branwen is not waiting to be used.

She carries her mother's flame-stamped hammer north, past the border, into the Fellmarch, to a people the kingdom calls its enemy and who remember the Hollowing and the founding war differently than any official history she has ever been taught. What she finds there is not the threat she was prepared for. It is the truth about who her mother was, why she ran, and what the Circlet was willing to suppress to keep it buried.

Blood and Bellows is a YA fantasy novel for readers who love:

  • Reluctant chosen-one protagonists who earn their power rather than simply receive it

  • Layered antagonists whose arguments are uncomfortably close to reasonable

  • Found family dynamics forged under pressure, with Cai, Tristan, and Rook pulled into orbit by Branwen's relentless trajectory

  • Historical mysteries threaded through epic fantasy worldbuilding

  • Female protagonists who ground their identity in craft, legacy, and hard-won self-knowledge

Perfect for fans of Spinning Silver, The Midnight Kingdom, and A Memory Called Empire, this is a story about what happens when a girl built for a small life discovers that the people she trusted were keeping the biggest secret of all.

She came to Camlough to learn control.

What she learned instead was why her mother ran.

And she brought her mother's hammer home.
