WHAT KEEPS A ROOM WARM ISN'T THE FIRE. IT'S WHO STAYS.
On a mountain pass claimed by two kingdoms and held by neither, there is exactly one warm room.
Isham Tell runs it.
For seven years, he's been the man who notices everything. He knows what travellers want before they ask, what they're afraid of, and which one is steering when they arrive with someone else. He keeps the fire lit, finds beds for the stranded, settles arguments before they become fights, and makes himself useful enough that nobody has to wonder what he might need in return.
It's a comfortable arrangement.
After all, a man who's always useful is a man nobody has to choose.
Then winter closes the pass.
The roads disappear beneath snow. The travellers stop coming. And someone from the life Isham left behind arrives at his door half-frozen, carrying five years of work and a chance to give him back everything he lost: his name, his innocence, and the truth of who wronged him.
Isham has spent seven years making sure nobody needs to choose him.
Now someone is asking him to choose what he wants.
And there is a complication.
The room is already full of people who have quietly made it home.
There's the woman with four crates she's never unpacked, because putting things away might mean admitting she's staying. The giant who leaves firewood by the door and refuses to be thanked. And an aggrieved talking cat who has walked past forty warmer hearths for years just to sit beside Isham's fire, despite their ongoing disagreement about his name.
None of them will say they're family.
That's not how warmth works here.
You don't earn it.
You stay for it.
But when the past Isham thought he'd buried comes knocking, staying may no longer be enough. Because proof that you were wronged is not proof that you were wanted.
And the hardest thing a self-sufficient man can do isn't surviving the winter, solving an old injustice, or accepting that someone else might finally know the truth.
It's sitting down.
Letting someone else pour the tea.
And trusting them to stay.
A cozy fantasy about found family, kept secrets, second chances, and the quiet courage it takes to let yourself be loved.
For readers of Travis Baldree and Becky Chambers, with a touch of Terry Pratchett-style humour: slow-burn belonging, gentle stakes, a talking cat with opinions, and a warm room at the end of a very long road.
Standalone, with room to return to the pass.
