Keeley Halloran is seventeen, and she has never once been anxious, depressed, or afraid.
Not because nothing has ever gone wrong. Because, for reasons she cannot explain, none of it ever seems to land on her the way it lands on everyone she loves.
Her best friend can't put her phone down long enough to finish a sentence. Another lies awake most nights certain the coastline she's never visited is already gone. A third counts exits on an ordinary street without knowing when she started. A fourth is losing money to an app built, quite literally, never to let him stop.
Keeley wants to know why. Not the easy answer. The real one.
So she builds a machine, in her bedroom, out of parts bought with birthday money, and starts going back to find out.
What she finds is not one answer but a century of them. A wheelwright's shop in 1923. A Sydney kitchen on Christmas Day, 1943. A Baltimore desk where a kind man got something badly wrong. A Cambridge laboratory where a pigeon taught the world how to build a habit nobody could put down. Chemicals that reached three generations before anyone thought to keep checking. Lies that once took a decade to travel, now arriving in an afternoon. And underneath all of it, one family that somehow, so far, keeps coming through clean.
Why Not Me is a novel built the way its narrator thinks: patiently, honestly, and unwilling to stop at the comfortable answer. It is a mystery with no villain, a family story with no easy inheritance, and a question that gets harder, not easier, the closer Keeley gets to the truth.
By the end, she isn't asking why her friends carry what they carry. She's asking why she doesn't.
What makes this edition different
Why Not Me is built in three layers, and you can stop at any one of them.
Read it as a novel, and you get a complete story, start to finish.
Read further, and you find a full second tier built for the investigative reader: chapter-by-chapter source verification, an adversarial review of every reference used, and a complete map showing how every thread connects.
Go further still, into a third tier built for the scientific reader: an AI's own written deliberation on the full weight of the evidence, a second, independently produced synthesis offered for direct comparison, and a formal research proposal arguing for the multigenerational, multidisciplinary study this book claims has never actually been done.
The book closes with something no novel usually includes: the complete, unedited conversation between the author and the AI that helped build all of it, disagreements and all, so you can see exactly where the AI held its ground, where it didn't, and where the author overruled it.
Why Not Me is a story first. It is also an argument, built in the open, for a question that deserves better than a comfortable answer.
Why Not Me rewards a reader who wants a gripping, honest story on its own terms, and just as fully a reader who wants to check every claim against it. Real professional branches run through it: toxicologists and epidemiologists tracing three generations of chemical exposure, economists and labour historians following one family through a century of industrial change, psychiatrists watching a diagnostic language evolve in real time, and disinformation researchers tracking a single lie's journey from a state intelligence agency to a fifteen-second video. Anyone working in AI alignment or research ethics will find a full account of where the AI held its ground, where it didn't, and where it was overruled. The book closes with a formal research proposal, arguing the multigenerational, multidisciplinary longitudinal study this question deserves has never yet been done.
