MONSTER The Untold True Story of Lizzie Borden, the Woman Who Got Away With the Most Notorious Murder in American History
August 4, 1892. Fall River, Massachusetts. A wealthy banker lies dead on his own parlor sofa, his skull split open while he napped. Upstairs, his wife is on the floor of the guest room, struck nineteen times with a hatchet while she bent to change the sheets.
The only people in the house that morning: a maid who says she heard nothing, and the victim's own daughter.
Her name was Lizzie Borden. Thirty two years old. Unmarried. A churchgoing woman known for charity work and quiet respectability, the last person anyone in Fall River could imagine swinging an axe.
Then the questions started. Why did her story about that morning keep changing every time police asked? Why did she burn a dress in the kitchen stove three days later, the same week officers were searching the house for bloodstained clothing? Why was there no blood on her, none at all, despite two killings brutal enough to leave the walls painted red?
She stood trial for her life. The jury took ninety minutes to set her free.
She never explained herself. Not to the police, not to the press, not once in the thirty four years she went on living just miles from the house where her father and stepmother died, inside a mansion she built with the inheritance their deaths made possible.
