PREDATORS AND PREY: A FLORIDA MYSTERY
Hawthorne Haven, a senior enclave of tree-lined streets, beautifully landscaped homes, and a serene lake embraced the natural world as one of its most important amenities. Here, an abundance of wild animals freely crossed the boundaries between civilization and wilderness on a regular basis. Their God-given rights to seek shelter, sustenance, and procreation could not be limited by the presence of man.
An immense neighboring state forest next door to this very large community harbored live oaks dripping Spanish moss, dense shade with creeping woodbine, and a huge dichotomy of flora and fauna. The wildlife found here were both predators and prey, sometimes interchangeable. The richness of drama was present in the many interchanges between these two worlds, for the residents in the community lacked the power to discriminate between the predators and the prey, both existing to balance the scale of life.
The picturesque community basked innocently in the eternal sunshine while a complex storm of cataclysmic events slowly began to gather and foment. It would eventually encompass the quiet little rows of houses that slumbered in peaceful oblivion, the bucolic grassy lots where wild turkeys ranged, the turquoise waters of the lake that lapped its shores, as well as the finely manicured lawns of the sprawling golf course. The hovering storm would draw upon the oppressive heat and pervasive moisture found in nature’s playbook, human and animal conflict, and the bizarre circumstances that were about to come together to create a true Florida mystery.
