A SCADA is not there to show data. It is there to let an operator act on a site they cannot drive to — a booster station eleven kilometres away, a reservoir reachable only through another site, a tank running on solar and a battery. Every design decision in it is judged on one question: does it help the operator act, or does it drown the screen?
This book is written for the operator or technician who inherits a SCADA someone else configured and has to understand it, keep it alive, and defend its numbers to an inspector.
• **The four pieces** — field, RTU, communication, central — and why the site must fail safe on its own when the central disappears.
• **Telemetry for real** — the tag list everything rests on, the deadband that trades bandwidth against fidelity, and the delay every value already carries.
• **Alarms an operator can use** — priority by action needed, flood suppression, and the chronically active alarm that hides the next real one.
• **Data that holds up** — delivered-volume metering that survives an outage, a watchdog that does not lie about a lost link, a historian with no silent holes.
• **Remote command done safely** — select-and-confirm, and the local limits a remote command must never override.
• **The compliance chain** — one chlorine number traced from the farthest sensor on the network all the way to the monthly report the regulator reads.
Every chapter ends by producing a completed field document — a tag list, an alarm rationale, a watchdog specification, a historian integrity test, a site commissioning plan. The blank forms are in Appendix D to photocopy.
**No brand names anywhere.** The volume runs on one fictional plant — Ashford Bend Water Treatment Plant and its three remote sites — the same plant as Volumes 1 and 2. Neither is a prerequisite.
